In September 1986 the center for archaeological research of eastern Belarus was established in Mogilev. It was organized on the basis of the department of general history of the historical faculty of Mogilev State Pedagogical Institute named after A. A. Kuleshov (head V. F. Kopytin) under the department of culture of the Mogilev Regional executive committee, the archaeological section of the regional council of the society for the protection of historical and cultural monuments, as well as the regional museum of local lore. The Center for Archaeological Research of Eastern Belarus was tasked with identifying and recording archaeological sites, preparing and publishing complete and detailed archaeological maps of the region.
On December 4, 1992 in order to coordinate scientific research on the problems of archeology and the history of the Republic, train scientific and pedagogical personnel and effectively use targeted state budget and contractual allocations by order No.253 of rector of Mogilev State Kuleshov Institute of technical sciences, the scientific research laboratory “Archeology and monument protection of the Republic of Belarus” was established within the framework of the scientific research institute. The scientific management of the laboratory on a voluntary basis was entrusted to Vyacheslav Kopytin, a candidate of historical sciences, an associate professor, corresponding member of the Belarusian academy of education (1942–2002), an authoritative specialist in the field of studying the problems of primitive archeology in eastern Belarus, author of more than 320 publications, including 21 monographs.
Since 2002 the laboratory has been managed by Igor Marzaluyk, a doctor of historical sciences, professor.
This archeological laboratory has the following structure —
